The Anti-Leader loves a spreadsheet.
Why? Because a spreadsheet doesn’t have a heartbeat. It’s a safe, cold place where you can hide from the messy reality of human effort. It allows a “little lordling” to manage by metrics without ever having to manage by meaning.
But I’ve learned—through 13 years of “rambling” before finishing my degree and decades in high-pressure law departments—that you cannot lead what you refuse to see.
I remember what it felt like to be “squished” by the weight of generic expectations. I also remember the shift that happened when I was 23, walking into a classroom with my daughter on my shoulders so she could color on the walls while I took notes. That wasn’t just “efficiency”; it was Humanity. I had a purpose bigger than my comfort, and I needed a system that recognized my personhood, not just my seat in the lecture hall.
In the H.E.A.R. Protocol, the first letter stands for Humanity.
The “Soul-sheet” Metric
Leading with Humanity means you stop treating your team (and yourself) like a resource to be mined and start treating them like a spark to be protected. In my consulting work, we don’t just look at KPIs; we look at “Soul-sheets.”
- Are your people “squished” by the weight of generic, automated instructions?
- Is there Alignment between their personal “Why” and the company’s “What”?
- Are they resilient enough to say “I don’t know” without fearing the insecure bluster of a supervisor?
Leading as a Person, Not a Title
AI can give you efficiency, but only a Bridge Leader can give a team permission to be human. When I teach the Voice & Values framework, I’m not just showing you how to clean up your email prose or draft a report faster. I am showing you how to reclaim your stance.
By defining your DNA before you ever touch a keyboard, you ensure that the technology reflects your soul instead of replacing it. You prove that you can be kinder, more balanced, and still get better results than the loudest man in the room.
The Gift: Reclaiming the Spark
If you feel like you’ve been reduced to a row on a spreadsheet, it’s time to shift the rail. I’ve released a framework called the “Voice & Values Starter.” It’s the foundational tool I use to ensure that even when I’m using a machine to act like a 50-person agency, the result is 100% human.
